Video - it's the future, I've seen it...
After 7 years of wheeling and dealing in TV theme audio, I thought it was about time that we spread our wings a little on the tellytunes website. So we've now added an all-new video section featuring over 300 clips of classic tv show opening and closing titles plus some vintage 80s TV adverts.
I started building up the collection, via the ever-growing Internet gem that is YouTube, just before Christmas. It took inspiration though from this fabulous blog post by FoxyTallChick to give me the push I needed to pull my finger out and finally get the section up and running on the site.
The results of the labours can be seen here!
For many years as a TV theme fan, I've always loved the sense of nostalgia that hearing an old theme tune can revive. It can conjour up all kinds of memories from the decades gone by.
For me, it's childhood Saturday mornings "down at the Superstore" or charging round the house pretending to be Mark or Jason from G-Force. Eating your tea while watching dodgy students hand-jiving their way through the Blockbusters credits. Stopping up late on Friday nights to watch Robert Ulrich in Vega$. Christmas never quite feels like Christmas until I've heard the Box of Delights theme tune at least once.
In later years, it's the likes of Crystal Maze, Quantum Leap and Star Trek: NG that strike a chord - all of which I was watching when I really should have been revising more thoroughly for that Physics A-Level that I failed miserably!
Themes can also bring back the crappier memories too - like the Masterteam theme sounding the end of the Broom Cupboard for another day and drawing the line between where the great kids telly ends and the dull grown-up stuff begins for the evening. Or the Howard's Way closing titles - one of the finest themes of all-time but still brings back that stomach-churning childhood sadness that it's bedtime on Sunday night and back to crappy school in the morning :o(
I plan to extend this new section of the website quite a bit in the coming weeks and it's no doubt a topic I'll come back to on the blog many a time. take a look through the clips section though and feel free to tell us what memories they bring back for you in the comments section below.
And here's just one selection from the very fine bunch to get you started!
