BBC News: Nicholas Witchell sits on protesting lesbians
It's 20 years to the day since newsreader Nichola Witchell famously grappled with a lesbian demonstrator after a protest broke its way into the BBC News studios.
As the BBC's News at Six wennt on air on 23 May 1988, the studio was "rather invaded" (as presneter Sue Lawley put it) by four lesbian demonstrators protesting against new laws which banned local councils from promoting homosexuality.
While Lawley did her best to continue presenting the show, her co-presenter Nicholas Witchell was left to sit on and muffle one of the protestors who had handcuffed herself to the newsdesk.
First aired: 23 May 1988, BBC1.
