Going For Gold: Eggheads' Daphne scoops first crown
Five announced today that they were reviving classic daytime quiz show Going for Gold.
Alas, no Henry Kelly this time around and, possibly even more devastating, no comedy pan-European contestants either. All competitors in the new series will be from the UK, eliminating the inevitable shame that used to come from previous UK contestants being beaten on the show by competitiors who were answering quiz questions in their second or third language!
So as John Suchet prepares to start playing catch-up, we look back at a couple of classic GfG clips. Firstly, the iconic opening featuring theme song by Hans Zimmer and waves and thumbs-ups by badly-dressed European types.
..and secondly the gripping(!) finale to the first series of the show which ran 1986-87 and saw Daphne Fowler (now of BBC2 Eggheads fame) identifying a tank and Robert Mitchum to clinch a pair of tickets to the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. Woop!
